It’s starting to get a bit more chilly out, and as we unpack our heavier sweaters and socks, are we forgetting about another important feature, like our lips?

Lips aren’t like any other part of our body. With a thinner layer of skin, our lips are missing the sebaceous glands (oil and sweat glands) that help to moisture our skin naturally, leaving us to moisturize our lips using our own saliva.

But in colder weather, the constant licking of our lips can leave them dried out and chapped, which isn’t only extremely painful but unattractive too. So stop neglecting your lips and start smiling, this winter is going to be one to enjoy.

The Dont’s of Chapped Lips

Don’t:

1. Don’t hold metals in your mouth such as paper clips, pens, etc.

Studies show that nickel or forms of metal can cause irritation of the skin, more specifically our lips.

2. Don’t drink juice from citrus fruits.

Citrus can cause irritation as well as a sun sensitive allergy. Don’t eat citrus fruits either, such as oranges, grapefruits, etc.

3. Don’t use lip balms that contain – eucalyptus, menthol and camphor.

These ingredients generally lead to irritations so try to find lip balms/ointments that don’t contain them.
